Prefinished hardwood flooring is a great choice for any flooring project. The format offers convenience and
consistency that means peace of mind for any homeowner looking for a beautiful hardwood flooring with a minimum of hassle. As solid
prefinished wood flooring comes out of the box microbeveled and with a factory finish of aluminum oxide, which
eliminates many of the potential pitfalls that can occur during installation.
After and during the installation of an unfinished floor, there are a variety of procedures required to bring
the floor to the level of completion of an installed prefinished floor. Unfinished floors require a good working knowledge of the levels
of expansion and contraction of the wood species being installed, as unfinished flooring is not pre-microbeveled. Additionally, an unfinished
floor requires staining and finishing that, if done incorrectly, can result in inconsistent coloring,
lack of glossiness, and eventual mechanical failure.
Installing a prefinished floor is a much easier prospect. Once the floor is down, you can walk on it immediately,
provided that, in the case of a glue down installation, the glue has had time to set. In the case of a nail down installation, you can walk
on it immediately. As unfinished flooring requires staining and finishing, these processes take more time and longer to dry, requiring more
labor costs.
Prefinished solid flooring is a natural product, completely comprised of one species of wood. This can result in more
movement in service than engineered flooring, which is comprised of perpendicularly placed plies that form a core attached to the underside
of a wear layer of the veneer species. It is important whenever working with solid wood products to take into account environmental
circumstances, such as extremely dry, moist, cold, or warm climates. These can affect different wood species in a variety of ways. Proper research of a
given species should be performed to ensure that these variables do not result in mechanical failures, such as cupping, bowing, gapping,
or checking.
